Etymology
The name 'Marichi' (मरीचि) derives from the Sanskrit 'marichi' meaning 'ray of light, mirage, or particle of light'. The root 'mrich' relates to shining. The name signifies 'a ray' — particularly of the sun or moon — making Marichi literally 'the luminous one'. This is deeply appropriate as Marichi was the first of Brahma's mind-born sons, a primordial ray of consciousness emanating from the Creator.
Historical Journey
Marichi occupies the most elevated position among the Prajapatis as the first mind-born son of Brahma. His son Kashyapa, through marriages to Daksha's thirteen daughters, became father of the Devas, Asuras, Nagas, birds, and virtually all species. This makes Marichi the great-grandfather of the entire cosmos in Puranic genealogy. In the Rigveda, Marichi is mentioned in creation hymns. The Marichi-Kashyapa lineage is the most extensive in Hindu mythology. Marichi is also one of the Saptarishis of the first Manvantara. During the Vedic and classical periods, Marichi gotra families maintained Rigvedic traditions and served as ritual priests.

The First Ray of Creation
The Puranas narrate that when Brahma began creation, the first conscious being to emanate from his mind was Marichi — a ray of pure light and intelligence. As the firstborn, Marichi received the first instructions in dharma from the Creator and transmitted this primordial knowledge to his son Kashyapa, who carried it into the vast genealogy of all beings. Marichi's name represents the first ray of consciousness that illuminated the newly created universe.
Marichi and the Cosmic Genealogy
The Vishnu Purana describes how through Kashyapa, Marichi became the ultimate ancestor of the cosmos. Kashyapa married thirteen daughters of Daksha: Aditi bore the Adityas including Vishnu, Diti bore the Daityas, Kadru bore the Nagas, Vinata bore Garuda and Aruna. When the sages contemplated who had the most extensive lineage, they acknowledged that Marichi's descendants encompassed all creation — making the Marichi gotra, metaphorically, the gotra of the universe.
Ritual Significance
Marichi Gotra families follow the Rigveda recension and recite the tri-pravara Marichi-Kashyapa-Aavatsaara during sankalpa. This pravara closely parallels the Kashyap gotra pravara, and both fall under the same gana. During vivah, Marichi families observe strict sa-gotra and sa-pravara exogamy and cannot marry into the Kashyap gotra due to shared pravaras. As the father of Kashyapa, Marichi is invoked during pitru-tarpana as one of the ultimate progenitors.
