📜Origin Story
Lohita ("red") appears in the gotra and pravara lists as a sage of the Vishwamitra (Kaushika) group. The Matsya Purana [198.15] gives the pravara Vishvamitra, Lohita, Ashtaka among the Kaushika families and says that those who share it may not marry. The Purana Index also records Lohita as a Kaushika sage and a Brahmishtha in the Brahmanda Purana [II.32.118] and the Matsya Purana [145.112]. The dictionaries of Monier-Williams and of Bohtlingk and Roth name him as a man whose descendants are listed in the Pravaradhyaya and in the Harivamsa. Little narrative survives beyond the lists.
Several other figures carry the same name and are not this sage: a serpent in Varuna's court, a king whom Arjuna conquered, and in some tellings a son of Harishchandra. The Puranic Encyclopaedia lists all of them.
