History & Significance

Unni means 'child' in Malayalam. A note in Thurston (1909) says it is an honorific for the male children of a Nambutiri household, and the common title of four Ambalavasi temple castes of Travancore: Pushpakan, Brahmani, Tiyattunni and Nattu Pattar. The note adds that Nayars probably first used the word for them. It is also a common given name, so Unni can belong to many Kerala communities.
